David has over 35 years of experience practicing exclusively in intellectual property law. He is a seasoned litigator with an enviable record of success. David was lead counsel in the landmark 2012 decision of the Supreme Court of Canada holding the patent for Viagra invalid, and for which he was awarded the “Milestone Case 2013” by Managing Intellectual Property. David was named “Patent Litigation Attorney of the Year 2013” by LMG Life Sciences, “Ottawa IP Law Lawyer of the Year 2014 by Best Lawyers in Canada and in 2016 was honoured by Benchmark Litigation as “IP Lawyer of the Year”. He was inducted into the LMG “IP Hall of fame” in September 2014. David is recognized as a “Life Sciences Star” by LMG, a “Litigation Star” by Benchmark Canada, is described as “Clearly one of the best litigators in Canada” in the IAM 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners 2017. He is ranked as “Most Frequently Recommended” for Intellectual Property and IP Litigation in the 2017 Lexpert/ALM Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada and is “Repeatedly Recommended” for Biotechnology in the 2017 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. David is internationally ranked for IP Litigation (Band 1) in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business and for Patent Litigation, Patents and Life Sciences in Who’s Who Legal: Canada. David is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, The Trial Lawyer Honorary Society, and a member of the Trial Law Institute and Diversity Law Institute.
David received an LLB in 1982 from McGill University, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical-Nuclear) in 1975 from the Royal Military College of Canada. He is a Professional Engineer, a Registered Patent Agent and Registered Trade-mark Agent. David was called to the Ontario Bar in 1984.
